College of Foreign Languages and Literature

 

College of Foreign Languages and Literature was formerly known as the English Department of Nanjing Institute of Chemical Technology established in 1988. In March 2002, the School of Foreign Languages and International Exchange of the former Nanjing University of Technology and the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Department of the former Nanjing Institute of Architectural Engineering established a new College of Foreign Languages, which was renamed as the College of Foreign Languages and Literature in May 2015.

I. Discipline Construction

The College has five undergraduate majors: English, Japanese, German, Chinese International Education and Spanish, as well as two master degree programs: the master degree program for the First-level discipline of Foreign Languages and Literature and the master degree program for the major of Chinese International Education, and enrolls students nationwide. The Japanese, English, and Chinese International Education majors were successively selected as provincial first-class undergraduate major construction points in 2019, 2020 and 2021, respectively. In 2018, the discipline of Foreign Languages and Literature was ranked 99th in the “Best Chinese Subjects Ranking”; and in 2021, the major of Japanese was ranked 81st in the “Best Chinese Majors Ranking”, and the major of Chinese International Education was ranked 125th in the “Best Chinese Majors Ranking”.

II. Faculty

The College has a group of full-time teachers with strong scientific research ability, advanced education concepts and rich teaching experience, all of whom graduated from famous universities in China. Among them, there are 4 professors and more than 40 associate professors, including 4 academic leaders and backbone teachers of Jiangsu Province “Qing Lan Project”, and more than 90% of the teachers have the experience of overseas study and further education. The College employs 10 foreign teachers of various languages all year round.

III. Education and Teaching

The College insists on student-oriented teaching, lays equal emphasis on theory and practice, and its teachers and students have achieved excellent results in various competitions. In the past five years, the College has won one runner-up in the Multilingual Teaching Star Competition of the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, 36 national awards in discipline competitions, and 43 second and third prizes of the provincial award for excellent undergraduate thesis. Among them, Professor Chen Shihua won the first prize of the 2017 “Jiangsu Province Award for Quality Engineering of Social Science Applied Research”, Professor Bao Gui won the third prize of the 15th Jiangsu Province Award for Excellent Achievements in Philosophy and Social Science, Associate Professor Liu Lingyu won the runner-up of the 2019 Multilingual “Teaching Star” Competition of the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, and three teachers, Ding Ruiyuan, Xu Xuehua and Lv Tianwen, won the special prize in the first “SFLEP Cup” National Japanese Language Electronic Courseware Competition for Universities.

IV. Scientific Research Achievements

The College has set up the Center for Research of Foreign Literature and Comparative Literature, the Centre for Research in Applied Linguistics, the Center for Research of Corpus and Translation Studies, the Center for Research of Foreign Issues, and the Center for Research of “Belt and Road” Education and Culture. It regularly holds expert lectures, doctoral forums, and lectures by returnees from abroad, and promotes new achievements in research work by using research centers and academic brand activities as the fulcrum. In the past five years, the College has won the support of the National Social Science Foundation of China for 5 projects, the support of Social Science Foundation of Ministry of Education for 1 project, and the support of Provincial Social Science Foundation for 11 projects, published 11 monographs, 6 translations, 9 textbooks, and issued more than 60 papers in SSCI, A&HCI journals and core journals. Also, for the first time, the College has published a paper on “Marxism Research” in the authoritative journal “Jianghai Academic Journal”, organized a series of column papers on “Eco-Marxism Research” in the Journal of Nanjing Tech University (Social Science Edition), and organized the column paper on “Exploration and Practice of International Political Linguistics” in the Foreign Language Research in Northeast Asia of Dalian University of Foreign Languages. Moreover, the College won 1 “excellent” grade in the conclusion acceptance by the National Social Science Foundation of China (the first time for the university), 3 prizes of Jiangsu Award for Philosophy and Social Science, 1 first prize of “Jiangsu Province Award for Quality Engineering of Social Science Applied Research”, 2 third prizes of Jiangsu Award for Outstanding Achievements in Philosophy and Social Science, and 1 “excellent” grade for the conclusion acceptance of postgraduate education and teaching reform and practice of Jiangsu Province (the first time for the university), among which, the “Research on the Discrimination of Ryukyu in Modern Japan” hosted by Professor Chen Shihua and funded by the National Social Science Foundation of China was awarded the excellent grade in conclusion acceptance in 2020, the subject on the reform and practice of postgraduate education and teaching in Jiangsu Province hosted by Professor Hu Yuanjiang and Professor Chen Shihua was awarded the excellent grade in the conclusion acceptance, and Professor Bao Gui’s “Statistical Methods for Linguistic Research” and Associate Professor Liu Lingyu’s “Practical Training in Writing for German IV” won the key teaching materials project in Jiangsu Province in 2019. In addition, the College has 3 excellent young backbone teachers under the “Qing Lan Project” for universities and colleges in Jiangsu Province, and 1 doctor of “Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program” in Jiangsu Province, has introduced 14 doctors and 2 distinguished professors, added 3 new projects in cooperation with overseas universities, started 2 university-level cooperation projects, sent out 43 students for study visits, and held 3 large academic seminars.

V. International Exchange

The College cultivates inter-disciplinary, application-oriented and internationalized foreign language talents with the cultivation idea of “solid foundation and great adaptation” and innovative teaching methods, and continuously strengthens foreign contacts and exchanges. It has successively established cooperation with many foreign universities, such as Birmingham City University (UK), University of Huddersfield (UK), University of Missouri (USA), Kagoshima University (Japan), Mie University (Japan), Leipzig University of Technology, Economics and Culture (Germany), Confucius Institute, University of Zaragoza (Spain) and Confucius Institute, University of Johannesburg (South Africa), providing students with rich opportunities for study tours, exchanges and exchange programs. It sends more than 20 students each year to participate in the study abroad exchange programs.

VI. Hardware Facilities

The College has superior operating conditions and first-class hardware and software facilities. The building of the Foreign Language Center covers a total building area of 7,000 square meters, and the Experimental Center for Foreign Language Teaching has 22 modern language laboratories, 7 multimedia classrooms, 1 multi-functional recording room, which can provide advanced digital language experiment equipment and a large number of audio and video resources; 1 international satellite TV room, which can be used to listen to multilingual radio stations such as English, Japanese, German, Spanish, French, Russian and Korean; and 1 practical ability demonstration hall. It is dedicated to improve the innovative and practical ability of teachers and students. The Foreign Language Reference Room has a rich collection of Chinese and foreign language books, language tools and periodicals.
