College of Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Engineering of Nanjing Tech University is one of the sources of Biochemical Engineering and one of the most influential and competitive higher education bases in the field of biological manufacturing in China. In the college, two majors, i.e. Biochemical Engineering and Pharmaceutical Engineering, are both listed in the First-Batch National First-Class Undergraduate Majors and approved by Washington Accord Engineering Education Professional Certification.

The college possesses great educational strength. Professor Ouyang Pingkai, honorary president and chief scientist of the college, is an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and honorary chairman of Chinese Society of Biotechnology. Besides, the college has 2 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 2 winners of the Excellent Young Scientists Fund, and 2 National Excellent Teachers.

The college has disciplines that develop robustly. Presently, there are 1 First-Level Discipline with the Qualification for Granting Doctoral Degree (i.e. Biological Engineering), 3 Second-Level Disciplines with the Qualification for Granting Doctoral Degree (i.e. Biochemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Engineering and Technology and Chemical Technology), 1 Second-Level Discipline with the Qualification for Granting Master Degree (i.e. Microbiology), and 1 Discipline with the Qualification for Granting Professional Master Degree (i.e. Biology and Medicine). Biochemical Engineering is listed in the National Key Disciplines and National Characteristic Key Disciplines of the Ministry of Education.

The college has a complete talent training system. It focuses on strategic emerging industries like Synthetic Biology and Systems Biology, Cell Culture and Metabolic Engineering, Biocatalysis and Pharmaceutical processes, Biomaterials and Processing Engineering, and Bioenergy and Resources and Environment Engineering. It builds a series of national high-quality teaching resources, including 1 National Teaching Team, 1 National Excellent Textbook, and 1 National Characteristic Major Construction Site.

The college makes significant contributions to the society. In recent years, it has undertaken 2 Projects of the National “973” Program, 1 Project of the National Natural Science Foundation Major Research Program, 1 Project of the National Key R & D Program and 1 Major International (Regional) Cooperation Project of National Natural Science Foundation. Additionally, it has won 1-time The First Prize of State Scientific and Technological Progress Award and 4-time Second Prize of State Technological Invention Award, and incubated more than 20 scientific and technological enterprises, which have made positive contributions to the long-term development of biological manufacturing & pharmaceutical industry and national economy in China.
