Geological Resources and Geological Engineering

(Discipline Code: 0818)

I. Discipline Overview

Geological resources and geological engineering is a discipline which studies geological body survey (exploration), evaluation, development and utilization. This discipline covers two major areas: resources and environment. This discipline takes earth science as the theoretical basis, studies the formation conditions, distribution laws and evolution mechanisms of geological bodies, and uses modern survey means to obtain, process, interpret and apply geological information, to identify the characteristics of potential geological resources and engineering geological bodies, and to serve for geological body exploration, development and utilization engineering. The main research contents of geological engineering include: theoretical methods for exploration, evaluation, design and construction of engineering geological bodies; theoretical methods for prediction and prevention & control of geological hazards; survey instruments and equipment; and techniques for geophysical response observation, processing and interpretation of geological bodies, etc.

The University established the discipline of geological resources and geological engineering in 1953, and it is the only university offering this major among the eight colleges and universities under the former Ministry of Construction. The first-level discipline direction of geological resources and geological engineering includes: "engineering geology", "geophysical exploration and information technology", "geological disaster prevention and control", etc. Main research areas include engineering characteristics of regional soils; joint action of geological bodies and structures; roadbed disaster prevention and control; engineering geophysical exploration and information technology, seismic hazard evaluation, intelligent monitoring of geological engineering; seismic geological disasters; ground settlement prediction; groundwater contaminant migration and contaminated site remediation.

II. Cultivation Goals

1. Guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, the discipline comprehensively implements the CPC's education policy, takes strengthening moral education and cultivating people as the fundamental, and the all-round moral, intellectual, physical and aesthetic development as the main line, and cultivates high-level talents with firm political stance, noble ideological character, rigorous academic attitude and innovative spirit.

2. Have the scientific attitude of seeking truth from facts and the correct, rigorous and honest learning style, combine theory with practice, be good at research and innovation, and have the teamwork spirit.

3. Master solid and broad basic theories, systematic and in-depth expertise, skills and methods in the field of geological resources and geological engineering, and have the ability to conduct academic research and communication in a foreign language as well as strong skills of computer application.

4. Have a comprehensive and thorough understanding of the current situation and development trend of the discipline as well as the latest progress of the research direction, have the ability to independently and creatively engage in scientific research of the discipline and effectively solve practical engineering problems, and be able to engage in scientific research, design, construction, management or other engineering work of geological resources and geological engineering projects.
